Throughout our pre-sexual playground days, the concept of having had sex (or to use the medical term “it”) was repulsive.

The more aware of our peers would use this to their advantage, interrogating any unsuspecting passerby with the accusation “Are you a virgin?”

Unaware of the word's meaning, and assuming it meant something insulting, the usual response was a defensive “No!”, much to the amusement of said interrogators, who would then announce to the school “Errr! Scott isn't a virgin! That means he's done it!”.

The upside of this, was that you inherited the power of the word, and you have precious minutes to find someone who hasn't heard about it yet, so you can trick them into saying they've done it too.

The myth behind Ryan Byrne's testicular imbalance was that he had been involved in a car crash, and rather than bursting, or tearing, the bollock in question had “went up inside him”.

Needless to say, he went by various names. There was the inevitable “Womble” - which sounds like “one-ball”, you see. Yes, you saw. Then there was the less inventive, but much more informative “Ryan, that kid whose ball went up inside him”.

Our school's variant on “Blind Man's Bluff” in which the blind man, rather than attempting to simply touch/tag the other children, would wildly swing his fists around, resulting in many injuries – mainly for those not playing the game, and looking the other way. Of course we would never warn the unsuspecting punchees, preferring to grin with anticipation as we watched the blind clobbering unfold.

That blood curdling screech as they dragged “the apparatus” from its comfortable wall placement across a polished hall floor.
